Madison Central Holds off Holmes 65-61 in Quarterfinal Thriller

Dominique Hawkins and Ken-Jah Bosley combined for 54 points in Madison Central's 65-61 quarterfinal win over Holmes on Friday. Hawkins got off to a slow start, hitting just 1 out of 9 for 2 points in the first quarter. "I was forcing my shots in the first half, but I just kept shooting and they went in," explained Hawkins of his sluggish start.

Hawkins may be the Mr. Basketball candidate, but James "Beetle" Bolden was the story of the first half. He had 9 of Holmes' 14 points in the first quarter and 12 points and 7 rebounds at the half. Madison Central shot just 4/18 in the first quarter of play, but Ken-Jah Bosley's 9 points helped the Indians close the scoring gap. Holmes was clinging to a 25-22 lead at halftime.

Holmes Coach Jason Booher liked his team's effort. "Holding them to 22 points at halftime, we're really pleased with that," he said at the half.

Madison Central focused on pressure defense to keep Holmes out of the paint. They edged ahead on a 3 pt. play by Ken-Jah Bosley to take a 36-34 lead with 2:22 on the clock in the third. Bosley had 9 points in the third for a total of 18 points to end the quarter. The Indians took a 38-36 lead into the final period.

A couple of clutch three-pointers by Hawkins and 4 straight missed free throws gave Madison Central a 50-47 lead in the fourth. Hawkins put his team on his back and scored all 14 the Indians' points in the final quarter or regulation. He missed a long shot from the top of the key that bounced off the back of the rim at the buzzer. The teams were tied at 52 heading to overtime.

Madison Central held a 62-58 lead with 39 seconds left in overtime. Holmes' B.J. Coston was fouled on a 3 point attempt and hit all three free throws to pull the Bulldogs within 1 at 62-61 with 16 seconds remaining. A missed 3 by B.J. Coston and Madison Central free throws from Hawkins and DeMarcus George sealed the win for the Indians.

Madison Central escaped in a thriller over Holmes 65-61. They advance to face Hopkinsville in the semifinals on Saturday.

Dominique Hawkins led Madison Central with 31 points and 12 rebounds. Ken-Jah Bosley had 23 points, 3 rebounds and 5 steals for the Indians.

James Bolden fueled Holmes with 29 points and 13 rebounds. He was 5-9 from three-point range. Quinton Chames added 9 points and 8 rebound s. He also had a block and a steal. Coston and Palmer had 9 points each for the Bulldogs.
