Madison Central Advances to Title Game for the First Time in School History

With the eyes of  the Kentucky basketball world and Mr. Basketball voters upon him, it would be understandable in Dominique Hawkins felt pressure coming into Saturday night's semifinal game with Hopkinsville. If he did, the senior guard didn't show it. He was never rattled. He didn't force a shot, even though he had just 12 points at the end of the third quarter when Hopkinsville jumped out to a 41-32 lead.

While Hawkins and Ken-Jah Bosley struggled, Hopkinville's Jordan Majors couldn't miss. He had 19 points at the half and was 8-8 from the line. His hot hand cooled  a little by the end of the third when he had 23 points.

Ken-Jah Bosley had struggled for most of the game, but  scored the final 6 points of the third quarter. The momentum had shifted to Madison Central. The game started to come to Hawkins. With 6:20 left in the fourth quarter, Hawkins had quietly tallied 17 points. Madison Central trailed by only three at 47-44. Hawkins began sinking shot after shot at the line. He shot a spectacular 17-20 from the stripe in the game.

"I knew I had to get it going. We only scored 18 points in the first half, " noted Hawkins.

A huge three-pointer by Hawkins gave Madison Central a 55-51 lead with 3:29 left. Majors responded hitting 2 big free throws to give Hopkinsville the lead  with 1:19  on the clock. Hawkins drew a foul and made both free-throws to make it 57-56. After sinking another free-throw, Hawkins missed the second but the Indians' Quan Taylor, who did not start, came up with the huge rebound on what Dominique called "the biggest play of the game."

Hawkins iced it from the line to give Madison Central the 60-56 win over Hopkinsville and advance to the first State Championship final in school history.

Dominique Hawkins finished with a double-double, 30 points and 10 rebounds. Ken-Jah Bosley had 13 points and 5 rebounds. Quan Taylor added 8 points and 5 rebounds. The Indians made 29 of 33 free throws on the night.

Jordan Majors led all scorers with 31 points. He also dished out 5 assists, pulled down 3 boards and recorded 3 steals. Trey Edwards had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. T.J. Elam scored 6 points and 3 rebounds. Jaqualis Matlock added just 3 points, but pulled down 11 rebounds. The Tigers made 15 of 20 free throws.

Dominique Hawkins did not deny noticing Coach Calipari watching him. He said of the opportunity, " I'm just blessed. I've got great talent. I'm glad he could come."

Madison Central will play for a state championship in Sunday's title game against Ballard.
