Johnson, Whitman combine for 39 points in 61-56 OT win over Scott County

Tanner Johnson sat out the first round of the regional tournament with an injured ankle. The rest must have been just what the doctor ordered. Johnson came out firing, scoring 7 quick points. He finished the night with 18 points and 6 rebounds. He also fueled the Knights with 4 three-pointers. With another convincing performance inside, Jack Whitman complimented Johnson's production with a double-double. He scored 21 points and 12 rebounds. The pair led Lexington Catholic to a 61-56 win over No. 10 Scott Co. Cardinals on Friday in the region semifinals at EKU.

The Knights led by as much as 14 points, but for the most part this was a tight game. Each quarter was won by only a three-point margin. Catholic took the first two 19-16 and 13-10. Scott Co. returned the favor winning the third and fourth quarters 12-9. A fade-away dagger by Trent Gilbert tied the game at 50 with 6.3 seconds remaining. A Tanner Johnson heave was off the mark and the Knights found themselves heading to overtime with the defending regional champions.

Lexington Catholic would strike first in overtime on two free-throws by Whitman. A big three by Johnson made it 55-52 with 2:08 remaining. A Whitman jumper and a trip to the line for Reese Ryan gave the Knights a 58-54 advantage with a minute to go. Quin Richardson fouled Jarrod Griffin who scored the game's final point. Griffin shot 7-10 from the line on the night to help ice it for LexCath.

Jarrod Griffin finished with 9 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Michael Talbott added 6 points and 1 rebound for the Knights.

Quin Richardson led Scott Co. with 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Trent Gilbert chipped in 18 points and 3 steals in addition to 3 three-pointers. Jalen Haddix contributed 9 points and 10 rebounds. He also had 2 steals for the Cardinals.

The unranked Knights advance to face Madison Southern in the finals on Saturday. Scott Co. ends the season with a 24-8 record.
