Holmes Holds Off PRP 65-60 in First Round of Sweet 16

Holmes jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead that stretched to 17-6 and never looked back. The Bulldogs held off Pleasure Ridge Park 65-60 in the first round of the Sweet 16 Tournament. The Panthers refused to go away, as they did many times in the game. They cut the lead to 4, but trailed 17-10 heading into the second quarter. Holmes' lead was fueled by B.J. Coston's 3 three-pointers in the opening quarter.

PRP outscored Holmes in the second quarter, but  trailed 31-26 at the half.PRP trailed by as much as 11 in the game, but a huge three by Antonio McDaniels cut the Holmes lead to 1 with Holmes leading just 40-39 in the third. Coston hit his 4th three-pointer with 45.8 left in the quarter and Holmes took a 45-41 pt. lead into the final quarter. Free throws helped Holmes hold off the Panthers. The Bulldogs came out on top at the line, making 26 of 35 free throws.

Holmes also won the battle from three point range. They were 7-12 for 58% from beyond the arc. Coach Booher cited out-rebounding the "taller, stronger PRP team" as a key to the victory. Chris Englemon led the rebounding effort with 18 boards. He also had 10 points and 2 blocks.

B.J. Coston led Holmes with 23 points and 2 rebounds, including 5 three-pointers. James Bolden had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. He also recorded 2 blocks and a steal. Quinton Chames chipped in 7 points and 4 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

PRP had just two players in double-figures. Lamontray Harris had 20 points and 12 rebounds on 9-14 shooting. Antonio McDaniels finished with 19 points and 2 rebounds.
B.J. Coston received Player of the Game honors and noted he "didn't feel any pressure, no pressure at all" when asked about his clutch performance on such a big stage.

The victory marked the 9th Region's first win in the Sweet 16 since the Bulldogs' state title win in 2009. It was the first ever first round loss for PRP.

The Bulldogs advance to face Madison Central in Friday's quarterfinals.
