Lexington Christian used a strong performance from senior guard Tyler Harville to hold off Tates Creek 53-49 in the opening round of the 43rd district tournament.
Harville said being a "little guy" means he has to do things to compensate for his size, a point drilled into him by his dad. Good advice, as small stature did not stop the Crown Trophy Star of the Game from scoring 21 points, including 4 three-pointers. He also grabbed 2 boards and dished out 2 assists.
Eagles Coach Brad Carter said they wanted the Commodores to make tough jump shots and had a "bigtime emphasis" on drawing out Tates Creek's Jordan Fucci.
Sophomore Matt Rose helped the cause with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. The effort did not go unnoticed by Coach Carter, "Matt Rose had a big day inside."
Cody Kalinowski added 8 points and 4 rebounds. Jon Lannertone chipped in 8 points and 2 rebounds for the Eagles.
Vincent Mattox led Tates Creek with 20 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Desmond Duke finished with 10 points and 3 assists. Jordan Fucci added 9 points, 9 rebounds for the Commodores.
The victory marked the first tournament win for Coach Carter. He noted that advancing past the district semifinals is something that has never been done before at LCA and they will "try to make history."
Lexington Christian faces Lexington Catholic in the semifinals on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. Tyler Harville on the matchup, "They have that switching zone. We'll go at them and attack them a little bit different."
