Lexington Catholic Gets 56-42 Victory Over Lexington Christian Academy to Advance to Finals

Lexington Catholic came out on top of the private school battle, defeating Lexington Christian 56-42 in Wednesday's 43rd District semifinal. The Knights got 22 points and 10 rebounds out of big man Jack Whitman on 7-14 shooting.

At the end of the first quarter, Whitman had 6 of Catholic's 12 points. Eight straight points by the Knights widened the margin to 20-10. A flurry of threes by Harville, Johnson and Lannertone made it 29-19 in favor of Lexington Catholic at the half. The two teams combined for 16 three-pointers on the night.

Catholic's defense did a good job locking down Harville, but a late Eagles rally cut the deficit to 10 heading into the fourth.

A huge three by LCA's Benton Nighbert chipped away the lead to 8. Another three by Matt Rose narrowed the margin to 6 points at 40-34. A critical moment came when Jon Lannertone picked up his 5th foul with about 4 minutes remaining. Lannertone was very emotional as he headed to the bench. The Eagles missed his physical presence. The Knights took away open looks. They also won the battle at the line, going  12-16 in the game. The Eagles did not shoot a single free throw. Back-to-back threes in the final minutes by Johnson and Griffin helped Lexington Catholic run away with the 56-42 win.

Jarrod Griffin scored 12 points and 4 rebounds. Tanner Johnson added 10 points, 3 rebounds for the Knights.

Tyler Harville led Lexington Christian with 12 points, including 4 threes. Matt Rose finished with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Benton Nighbert had 9 points on three three-pointers.

Lexington Catholic advances and will face the Dunbar Bulldogs on Friday in the district finals.
