Lexington Catholic held off Woodford County 63-53 in the first game of the 11th Region Tournament on Monday. Jack Whitman led the Knights with 17 points and 7 rebounds.
Michael Talbott's 6 points sparked the Knights to a 20-9 point early second quarter lead. Lexington Catholic outscored the Yellow Jackets 20-7 in the second quarter due in part to three three-pointers by Jarrod Griffin. Catholic needed someone to step up with big man Jack Whitman limited to just four points in the half. Woodford Co. used improved shooting, including 9 points in the quarter for junior guard Eli Boggess, to cut the lead to 10 with about 3 minutes left in the period. The Yellow Jackets won the scoring battle in the third, but trailed 45-33 heading into the fourth.
With 5:57 remaining and Woodford Co. down by 10, a crucial call came on Chase Henderlight. His personal foul on Jack Whitman and additional technical foul resulted in three points for Catholic and made it 52-39. That ended the Yellow Jackets' rally.
