Lincoln County pulls out 60-54 victory over Harlan County in Dunkin Donuts Shootout

Harlan County’s Chad Massingill hit a layup with four minutes remaining in the second quarter to tie Lincoln County at 22-all, and it was a slugfest from then on.

After Lincoln County took a 17-12 advantage into the second quarter of its game in the Dunkin Donuts Shootout, Harlan County fought back, largely behind Massingill’s effort. He finished with 21 points off 7/12 shooting, with all of his made field goals coming from inside the three-point arc.

While Massingill was driving to the basket, Lincoln County relied on its outside shooting to pull away from that 22-all tie. Jacob Conway (who finished with 22 points) hit a three in the final seconds of the second quarter to give his team a 32-26 advantage heading into the locker room. The Patriots shot 8/20 from behind the arc, compared to Harlan County’s 2/8.

Another tie came about late in the third quarter; Lincoln’s Brandon Pittman tied the game at 36-all with just over a minute to play in the period, and teammate B.J. Hoover stroked a three-pointer just as the quarter ended. Timmy Taylor and Pittman continued the three-point trend, each knocking down ones of their own during the next two possessions to begin the fourth quarter.

Harlan County’s James Bond cut Lincoln’s lead to six, and some Black Bears free throws made the score 47-43 at the 3:20 mark. That’s when things started to get a little chippy: Pittman ran into a Harlan County player, but no foul was called. On the next possession, Lincoln’s Luke Hill fouled out after another Black Bear went flying across the court.

Massingill’s free throw cut Lincoln’s lead to four points again at the 2:56 mark, but the Patriots began to pull away after several made free throws in the final minutes. A Bond three-pointer cut the deficit to four again, but with only eight seconds remaining, and Lincoln County was able to pull out the 60-54 victory.
