CovCath Storms Past Rival Highlands 74-34

One of the fiercest rivalries in Northern Kentucky met on the hardwood Monday night as Covington Catholic (14-2) traveled to Highlands (6-9) for a 9th Region match-up.

Highlands scored on the first possession of the game, but the Colonels answered immediately with a 3-pointer from junior Nick Ruthsatz and never looked back. Covington Catholic, rated 8th in the state by MaxPreps, controlled all aspects of the game, winning 74-34, hitting 46% from three and out-rebounding the Bluebirds 37 to 23.

Ruthsatz led all scorers with 16, while senior Nick Fredrick added 13 points, making 3 of 4 from outside the arc. Senior Zack Tobler added nearly a double-double, scoring 10 and pulling down 8 rebounds, while sophomore Bo Schuh added a well-rounded stat line: 7 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocked shots, to help the Colonels pull away from their rivals. 6’5” Schuh scored twice on dunks to the excitement of the always-vocal contingent of Covington Catholic students that traveled to the game.

For Highlands, senior Bailey Witte led the way with 8 points and junior Nick True scored 6 in a game that saw nine Bluebirds score. Witte and True each grabbed 4 rebounds and Witte dished out 3 assists.

Next up, the Bluebirds host Campbell County (7-10) on 1/17. The Colonels will travel out of the region to face the 9-4 Elizabethtown on 1/17.
