A packed house, including Xavier head basketball coach Chris Mack, watched as two of the 9th Region’s top teams squared off in Park Hills. Covington Catholic (13-1), rated 12th in the state by Litkenhouse, hosted the 16-0 16th rated Holmes Bulldogs on Tuesday night.
After trading baskets to begin the game, the Colonels jumped out to a 14-10 first quarter lead. The Bulldogs helped swing momentum their direction during the second quarter using ramped-up full-court press, and the hot shooting of Holmes sophomore James Bolden and senior Chris Englemon to take the lead.
Holmes went into the locker room at the half up 39-35 after Covington Catholic senior Sawyer Pauly hit a shot from beyond mid court as time expired in the 2nd quarter.
During the second half Covington Catholic, led by senior Nick Fredrick’s 18 points, closed the gap to within 3 points several times, but Holmes’ hot hands proved to be too much to overcome for the Colonels. The Bulldogs pulled away in the final minutes of the game to win 71-60. Bolden led all scorers with 27, Englemon chipped in a double-double with 14 and 10 while senior BJ Coston added 17 for the Bulldogs, shooting 5 of 7 from beyond the arc.
Next up for the Bulldogs will host Cooper (12-3) on 1/11, while the Colonels travel to 15th rated Newport Central Catholic (11-1) on 1/10 in another key 9th Region match-up.
